The popular prescription acne medication called Accutane or Isotretinoin (a synthetic form of vitamin A) has been prescribed for years to treat acne.
However, due very serious side effects - there have been a number of lawsuits popping up all over the country.
The long list of nasty side effects include:
This medication was approved by the FDA sometime 1982. However, within a few years of its approval, reports of serious side effects began to come in, ranging from depression to seizures.
More recent reports include inflammatory bowel disease and pancreatitis.
Accutane class action lawsuits started sometime after 2007 when a man – who suffered serious gastrointestinal harm – was awarded 2.5 million against Hoffman La Roche Group, the drug company that manufactures the acne medication.
Another man was awarded $ 7 million because he had to have his colon removed.
And, in 2008, a 24-year-old woman was awarded a whopping $10 million after having part of her intestines removed due to inflammatory bowel disease.
Note: Hoffman La Roche maintains they've warned patients and health care providers against use during pregnancy.
Hoffman La Roche is planning to appeal all judgments claiming that the link between Accutane and inflammatory bowel disease has not yet been proven.
If you need to file a lawsuit keep in mind there are lawyers all across the country taking cases - from New York to California.
However, if you or a loved one has experienced any side effects or complications, don't wait - please contact your doctor immediately.
Also, it's important to know that different states have different regulations.
For example lawyers in Southern California warn that the courts place a limited time frame in which you can file a lawsuit.
This limited time frame is called a statute of limitation and it varies from state to state so keep that in mind.
If you don’t file within a certain time frame, you may lose your right to file a claim.
The same goes for other states like Georgia. Lawsuits must be properly filed and within their statue of limitations, or you’ll forfeit your right to seek damages.
